2014 Oak Street Po-Boy Festival in New Orleans

On Sunday November 23rd from 10am - 6pm, Oak Street, located in Uptown New Orleans, will celebrate a proud history and great sandwich. Po-boys are a staple in the diet of any New Orleanian, and they have been known to haunt the taste buds of visitors.

The history of the po-boy
The "Po-Boy" or "Poor Boy Sandwich" came to life in 1922. Bennie and Clovis Martin, two street car operators from Raceland, opened Martin Brothers' Coffee Stand and Restaurant in the French Market of Down Town New Orleans.

On July 1st, 1929, the street car operators and conductors went on strike after some heated contract negotiations. The union that the Martin brothers had been a part of, as well as over 1,000 other jobs were in jeopardy. Similar strikes around the nation were taking shape, and the strikes of 1929 became one of the most violent in US history. The street car company attempted to hire "strike breakers" from New York to run the street cars in New Orleans, but the public was not having it. Over 10,000 New Orleanians gathered on Canal St. in support of the strikers, and watched them bash and burn the first street car that was to be operated by a strike breaker.

The public continued to avoid the public transit system in support of the strikers.

The Martin brothers kept their promise, handing out long sandwiches to workers at no cost until the strike ended. And that my friends, was the birthplace of the po-boy sandwich.

See you there!!

So, come out to Oak Street on Sunday and get your fill of live music, great atmosphere, and of course... lots of Po-Boy sandwiches and other tasty local treats!
